“We have been fortunate to have had great coaches (Sam Blalock, Dana Blalock, Steve Afenir, Troy Afenir, Shell Scott, Mark Jones, Drew Gissinger and others) through J-Bird’s developmental years and you are without question on of the ELITE”

Medicine Ball

There are unlimited ways to train with medicine balls. They are fun and you can train explosively with them. Utilizing the same proper techniques and posture as lifting weights, the medicine ball can be absorbed and thrown explosively. This includes both concentric and eccentric motions of muscle contraction and stretching. They are one of the most functional ways to train your muscles and core strength. Equal development on both sides of your body is critical to proper training. Training with the medicine ball also helps us become more ambidextrous, since we have to train equally on both sides.

One of the great things about a medicine ball is you can train alone. Just find a wall and you can do virtually all the drills by yourself. Various exercises include explosive:

  • Throwing
  • Jumping
  • Sit-ups
  • Oblique work

Each exercise can also be tailored to be very sport specific to the individuals needs. Don't limit yourself to just explosive work with medicine balls. Standing on them develops tremendous balance. Also, dribbling or ball roll with your feet, develop a nimble touch while keeping you light on your toes. Remember, an advanced way to do your sit-ups, is to use the medicine ball while on the ever unstable Swiss ball.
